Gender Distribution in Selected Health Professions

Meliora Collective supports regulated health professionals—most of whom are women—navigating the leap into self-employment. Women remain underrepresented in self-employment and entrepreneurship across Canada.

Research from The 51 and My Normative highlights that while women make up a significant portion of the health workforce, they face systemic barriers to entering private practice, including access to capital, mentorship, and professional networks. Meliora Collective helps close this gap by providing the tools, support, and community needed to make self-employment more accessible and sustainable for women in health.

  • Nursing: As of 2021, approximately 91% of regulated nurses in Canada were female, indicating that nursing continues to be a predominantly female profession.

  • Social Workers: The social work profession in Canada is predominantly female. A 2014 study reported that between 80% and 88% of Canadian social workers identified as female.

  • As of 2020, women comprised 77% of psychologists across the majority of provinces, with the highest percentage in Alberta, where women made up 79.8% of professional psychologists.

  • Occupational Therapy: Historically, occupational therapy has been predominantly female, with men constituting only 5.8% of occupational therapists in Canada.
